Painting activities like apple stamping provide open ended play! Kids can create in so many different ways.
- They can use different paint colors, different sizes and shapes of apple slices, and different papers and brushes.
This pumpkin stamps painting activity is an example of how kids can use parts of the food that are not edible or will be discarded.
For apple stamping, you can use shriveled or brown apples that will not be eaten, or that may be washed, trimmed, and peeled, and made into applesauce.
It will also help to choose an apple with a stem!
This is a fun activity to add to a harvest theme, or a back-to-school theme, in your preschool or kindergarten.

You will need:
- Small apple
- Paint, red and/or green
- Paintbrush
- Plain paper

Cut the apple through the middle.
- The apple must be halved by cutting through the middle as shown, in order for the ‘star’ to appear.

Look for the star inside the apple.
Remove the seeds.
- Save the seeds for a STEAM activity: Exploring Seeds in Foods.

Cover the apple with paint using a paint brush.
- Alternatively, pour some paint into a tray and dip the apple in the paint. The stem on the apple will serve as a handle for holding the apple as you apply paint, or for dipping the apple stamp into the paint tray.

Press the apple firmly onto plain paper. Stamping works best on a solid, flat surface like a table top.
A stem on the apple comes in handy for holding, painting, dipping, and stamping. Otherwise, expect the activity to be a little messy. Fingers holding the apple stamp will get into the paint! But this can be a rewarding part of the experience!
After stamping, count the ‘stars’ on the paper!

Draw an outline of a tree. Stamp apples into the tree top.
- Color the trunk with crayons or markers, or stamp with apple slices or sponges dipped in brown paint. Here’s a link to a tree painted with sponge paint stamps.
